Cultural Jesus

In Luke 4 Jesus began his ministry In the Synagogue of his hometown. He read Isaiah 61 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me because he has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he has sent me to heal the broken hearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord”. Everyone loved it, what gracious words, but then something happened. A recognition, “hey wait a minute, isn’t that Joseph’s son?”. Their familiarity with him, gave them a reason to draw the line and stop accepting what he had to say, the next thing you know they want to throw him off a cliff. One of things this teaches us, is that it’s possible to have a preconceived idea of Jesus like these people did. People can have an expectation of what they think Jesus should say or do. It’s possible to have our own Jesus and not the real Jesus, or a Cultural Jesus who is fashioned by secular people, or carnal people. We like what he says up to a point, the nice things and what he can do for us, but the moment he says something that doesn’t fit with our idea of him, is the moment we draw the line and reject him. The true Jesus. That text is an illustration of what took place in less than one week around Passover/Easter time. On Palm Sunday, he was a rock star. They shouted “Hosanna, Hosanna blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord”. Then in just a few days, they they shouted “Crucify him”. Here is a link to a great song on that theme that I listen to on my iPod. It’s called “Cultural Jesus” by Curtis “Voice” Allen, he’s got a great testimony, but in this song he really hits a home run. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2HXnQ0i4DEY&feature=youtube_gdata_player

The doctrine of a minister must credit his life, and his life adorn his doctrine

- Jean Daille

Since the Church as been working through Romans 9 the preservation of the Saints has been on my mind. The whole question of “once saved always saved”, or if a person can lose his or her salvation has been asked for thousands of years by really smart people. I began to think about it when my daughter and I were clearing our yard of the winter debris this weekend. After gathering all the dead branches we started to burn them and it made me think of the solution. Jesus told us to “Abide in me, and i in you, as the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye except ye abide in me.” John 15.4. In verse 6 he goes on to say “if a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered, and men gather them, and cast them into the fire and they are burned.”. Trying to apply those questions to an individual who at most is in apostasy or at least backslidden can lack assurance. It leaves us wondering. I think the Lord wants us to rephrase the question and thereby take any ambiguity out of it. The question of course is “are you abiding.”. All I know is like the last photo, I was a brand plucked out of the fire and I want to abide! Maranatha!

Russian troops arrive in Syria

It seems Ezekiel 38 is right and the Bible is more relevant than ever!

Sweden Going Cashless

I guess the Bible is relevant.

Our last day in Israel was spent on the Mount of Olives, the Garden of Gethsemene, the pools of Bethesda and finally the Garden Tomb. We had a great time in the scriptures, communion and singing. I love to see everyone when they come out of the empty tomb. It was really an excellent trip this year. The Lord did some amazing things in everyone’s heart. Next year in Jerusalem!

The last post was a picture of a gigantic sistern on Masada. Here are some more from the day.

Today was Engedi, Masada and the Dead Sea, the lowest spot on the planet. For those who don’t know the salinity level is much much higher than any other boy of water. That’s why it’s so easy to float.

We went to a new spot for David and Goliath in I Samuel 17. We were on top of the tel Azekah found in that chapter and could see all the way to Shochoh and overlook the Elah valley. It was AWESOME!
